Mary’s Conception

Continuing from Elisabeth’s conception, Yeshua’s birth becomes rather simple after Mary’s conception is determined.  Starting with Luke 1:24-25:

24And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, 25“Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.”

From the conception of Elisabeth, middle to the end of June, Luke 1:24 is referring to middle to the end of November.  Luke 1:26 is important time reference.

26Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,

It states in the 6th Month.  This is referring to the 6th month of Elisabeth pregnancy.  Elisabeth’s conception was in the 11th  or 12th week of the Hebrew year, or the middle to the end of June.  Six months later would be December time frame.  Luke 1:26 is referring to the 6th of month of Elisabeth’s pregnancy that is the December time frame.

Approximating this as early to middle of December, next in Luke 1:27-28:

27To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Again a prophesy from Gabriel, listen to Mary’s response in Luke 1:29.

29And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

This is a little different than when Gabriel spoke to Zacharias.  It is clear that Mary was in fear from Luke 1:30.

30And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

Gabriel said fear not.  However, Mary does not become mute like Zacharias.  Although Zacharias and Mary say almost the same thing, the difference is Gabriel could perceive or discern the thought of their hearts.  Mary was willing, wear as Zacharias needed a little motivation to accomplish his task.  Gabriel tells Mary in Luke 1:31-33:

31And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name YESHUA. 32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

This is the prophecy of the Messiah to come, He would come through a virgin.  Mary asks a question, Luke 1:34.

34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

The difference between Mary and Zacharias is that with Zacharias it should of been obvious to him what he needed to do.  This is similar to what Abraham did to bring forth Isaac.  In the case of Mary, this was something that had never happened before.  For Mary to do anything she could think of, would have brought forth sin.  That is why an explanation was needed.  Gabriel explains in Luke 1:35-36

35And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.  36And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

Now when Gabriel talked to Mary, we are told it was the 6th month.  How do we know it was the 6th month of Elisabeth’s pregnancy and not the 6th month of the year?  We are told in Luke 1:39-43:

39And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; 40And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 41And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit: 42And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

At this point Mary was pregnant with Yeshua.  Next, Luke 1:56:

56And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

Mary was at Elisabeth house for 3 months.  There is a possibility that this could have been much later after Gabriel spoke to Mary.  However, in Luke 1:57:

57Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

After Mary leaves, Elisabeth gives birth.  Here are the facts:

  • When Mary shows up at Elisabeth’s, she is pregnant.
  • She stays 3 months, and after that Elisabeth gives birth.
  • Therefore, Mary had to be pregnant prior to the 6th month of Elisabeth’s pregnancy.
  • A normal, full term pregnancy is 280 days, 40 weeks or approximately 9 1/2 months.
  • When Gabriel talked to Mary it was the 6th month of Elisabeth’s pregnancy, and that would be the end of Kislev, or a December/January Time Frame.

Mary’s Conception was in December/January, and 9 months later Yeshua would be born in a September/October Time Frame.

One has to ask the question, is it any time or would God have a set time?
