1st & 2nd Death

The Lake of Fire is in Revelation 20:14.

14And death and hell (hades) were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

The Lake of Fire is Second Death.  If there is a second death, there must be a first death, Hebrews 9:27.

27And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (krisis):

If there is a 1st death and 2nd death, there is the expectation that there is a difference between them.  That would make logical sense.  Biblically, there is a difference.

1 Corinthians 15:22

22For as in Adam all die, even so in Messiah shall all be made alive.

Adamic death is not second death.  Second death is for those who ultimately reject the remedy of Messiah.  Adamic Judgment is not final, Romans 5:18.

18Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

It does not mean that all will be saved, but that there is a provision from God for all mankind.

1st death is Adamic Death and Second Death is the Lake of Fire.  To understand the difference, one must have biblical understanding of Adamic Death.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 & 10

5For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

10Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

The grave is the Hebrew word sh^e’owl {sheh-ole’}.  It literally means the resting place for the soul.  That is an Old Testament view of death.  The dead know nothing, they are not conscious.  Somehow this understanding is lost by many today.

Lets look at some more, Psalm 6:5.

5For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?

Again grave is the Hebrew word sh^e’owl {sheh-ole’}.

Psalm 115:17

17The dead praise not Yehovah, neither any that go down into silence.

Psalm 146:3-4

3Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.  4His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

In the Hebrew scriptures, death is not a place of torment.  In fact, Pharaoh who caused so much havoc for Israel in Ezekiel 32:31:

31Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith the Lord Yehovah.

Pharaoh is not suffering in death.  Ezekiel speaks of Pharaoh being comforted in Sheol.

We need to come to grips with verses like this.  In the simplistic view of judgment, it allows for the mixing of all the judgments into one gooey mess.  The result is a lack of understanding of the word of God and judgment as God declares it.

Remember, we are talking about the Adamic Judgment.  There is relief from this judgment.  Yeshua is the remedy for Adamic Judgment, Romans 5:18-19.

18Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.  19For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

First death came through Adam.  Messiah is the only possible deliverance.  There is no salvation outside of Yeshua.  The man that dies in Adamic Sin is not without hope.  Messiah gives great hope through the resurrection of the dead.
