Our Man Job

This discussion will start with the Book of Job.  When studying the Book of Job, it is important to understand what God said about Job and not the opinion of others.  Throughout time, Job has been accused of various heinous sins.  Some of the things stated about Job includes that he had a sin of pride or that Job’s own fears got the better of him.  It is taught by some that Job actually brought this misery on himself.  None of these are true.  If one would stick to the text, it is obvious that Job was a righteous man in the eyes of God, Job 1:1.

1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

Job was perfect and upright, he feared God and eschewed evil.  To eschew evil is to state that Job avoided evil.  Job had a disdain or distaste for evil.  The first mention of Job gives the impression that he was a virtuous and righteous individual in the eyes of God, Job 1:2-3.

2And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. 3His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

Job had a large family by today’s standards.  He had plenty of livestock.  He was considered the greatest of all.  It seems as if everything was going well for Job.  Job had a house full of servants.  He had the respect of those around him.

Now Job’s children would occasionally get together and have feasts, with lots of eating and drinking, Job 1:5.

5And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

Just in case something would possibly happen that was inappropriate in any way, Job would rise early in the morning to offer burnt offerings.  Job was continually interceding on the behalf of his children.  That is something we should all be doing.  He continued to be their covering throughout life.  This is similar to what the high priest would do for the nation of Israel or what our High Priest does today.  This is our man Job.  He is a pretty good guy, much better than many today.  Few of us today have received the praise he did from God.
