Spiritual Abortion

Lets take a little break from this parable and go back to the Hebrew Scriptures.  Judah had a son, Genesis 38:6-7.

6And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar. 7And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Yehovah; and Yehovah slew him.

In those days, if one’s brother died, they were suppose to marry their brother’s wife.  This was to bring forth seed in the brother’s name.  This ensured that his name would never go out in Israel.  This is called the Levirate Marriage.

Onan was the next in line, Genesis 38:8-10.

8And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. 9And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. 10And the thing which he did displeased Yehovah: wherefore he slew him also.

Onan knew that the seed was not going to be his.  Now there is two dead.

Here is something to think about.  In the parable of the sower, God told us that one cannot just simply spread seed on people.  This is because it will not result in growth, unless the soil is worked.  If one just spills seed, knowing there will not be any results, does that make them Spiritual Onanites?

To prevent this, we need to learn to witness God’s way.  We should not be putting seed down and just hoping for the best.  We should learn to work the soil, remove the stones and let the thorns be burnt up.
