Peter, Noah and Yeshua

There are those that believe 1 Peter 3:19 means that Yeshua went to preach to those in sheol or to disobedient angels and eventually took some to heaven with Him.

19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

However, that is neither the context of the chapter nor Yeshua’s purpose.  Many believe this because it states that Yeshua went and preached unto the spirits in prison.  However, Isaiah declares in Isaiah 61:1.

1 The Spirit of the Lord Yehovah is upon me; because Yehovah hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of Yehovah, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

Those in prison are those that are on the earth as Isaiah stated in Isaiah 42:7.

7To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

The prisoners were those living that had been taken by the trap of devil.  This is same as the condition of the captive in Ephesians 4:8-10 previously discussed.

8Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.  9(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

Peter further makes reference to Noah in 1 Peter 3:20.

20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

What Yeshua did was similar to what Noah did.  Noah preached to these people outside the ark to come with him to physical salvation.  These rejected Noah’s preaching as many rejected and will reject Yeshua’s preaching.  This is a Hebrew Parallelism (refer to 70th Week Hebrew Parallelism for further discussion).
