Seventh Year

Part of this study will examine the laws for the Sabbatical Year and the Jubilee.  Although not often discussed by believers today, the Sabbatical Year and the Jubilee have eternal meaning for the believer, Leviticus 25:1-2.

1And Yehovah spake unto Moses in mount Sinai, saying, 2Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto Yehovah.

The Sabbath that is referred to in Leviticus 25:2 is not a seventh day Sabbath.  It is a one year Sabbath of rest for the land, Leviticus 25:3-4.

3Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof; 4But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for Yehovah: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.

Six years, one is allowed to work the land.  However, in the seventh year, no one was to sow the fields nor prune the vineyards.  Furthermore in Leviticus 25:5:

5That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land.

Even if the land produces, one is not suppose to harvest.  This means that no income could be derived from the land that year, Leviticus 25:6-7.

6And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee, 7And for thy cattle, and for the beast that are in thy land, shall all the increase thereof be meat.

It was to be a provision for the servants, strangers, even the beast.  Essentially, it was for the poor.  This is the great fairness and equity of God.  The produce of the land in the Sabbatical year is for all.

If one observes the Sabbatical year, God provides a blessing, Leviticus 25:19-22.

19And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety. 20And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase: 21Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for three years. 22And ye shall sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year; until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store.

If one observes the Sabbatical Years, the land through God would provide the increase to the 9th year.  Not a bad deal, take a year off and have plenty of food for three years.

If your boss told you to work six years, take the seventh off and he would pay, would you do it?  If our boss told us, we would be looking for a signed contract.  This is the Bible, this is a matter of faith, it is a truth.
